Shopping Around includes a text written in 2001 and presented here as an audio recording. The autobiographical narrative recounts a journey between several cities, reflecting on the similarities and differences between them.
The work was exhibited as part of an exhibition in an empty, never-let unit within a shopping centre in Leeds. References within the narrative to now defunct companies Borders, C&A and Railtrack resonate with this setting. Originally conceived as a contemplation on the place of individuality within our consumer culture, the work now perhaps highlights the impermanence of corporate as well as individual existence.
