How do you pronounce 'read'? – 'red' or 'reed.' Now consider the word 'blew.' Does it sound any different (or feel any different in your mouth) to the word 'blue'? The film Sound Symbol Correspondence (Read and Blew) is inspired by these conundrums. Cards displaying images, colours and words associatively derived from 'read' and 'blue/blew' are used to play the simple memory game 'pairs.' The game relies on players finding and matching identical cards. But where in the game pairs the act of matching is simple, in the English language the equivalence between a word's sound and its transcription is much more slippery.
